Requirements, Process, and Benefits

If you want to lead a licensed childcare center in Texas, you’ll need more than passion and experience — you’ll need the Texas Childcare Director Credential. This state-approved qualification proves you have the training, knowledge, and leadership skills to run a program that’s safe, compliant, and successful.

Texas Director has been an approved training provider longer than anyone else in the state, and we update our course content every two years to stay current with laws, best practices, and industry trends. If you’re ready to step into leadership, here’s what you need to know.

What Is the Texas Childcare Director Credential?

The Texas Childcare Director Credential is a formal recognition that you’ve completed the state-required training to manage a licensed childcare center. It’s issued by training providers approved by Texas Health and Human Services Child Care Licensing.

Earning this credential ensures you understand the regulations, leadership principles, and operational skills needed to lead staff, support families, and keep your program compliant.

Do You Always Need the Credential?

NO, there are other options.  But many leadership positions in Texas licensed childcare programs require you to demonstrate that you can be a licensed director.  The Director Credential is the best way to do that.

However, there are a few exceptions:

  • Single-skill programs (such as dance, sports, or art programs) may not require it.

  • Temporary programs (such as short-term holiday camps) may also be exempt.

If you’re unsure, check with Texas Child Care Licensing before you apply for a director role.

If you’re pursuing the credential through training (the most common route), you must:

  • Be at least 21 years old

  • Pass the required Texas background checks

  • Complete a state-approved Director Credential course
